Objectives

#1

One of the main objectives of the CSG, by bringing together the research activities of SOCIUS, ADVANCE, CESA and GHES, was to create the conditions to improve the quality of its scientific results. The researchers of this consortium believe that the study of contemporary socio-economic and organizational reality requires a broad and integrated perspective, which is not limited to traditional scientific specializations.

#2

The study of economics and organizations needs a thorough reading, which understands the aggregate mechanisms that condition human decisions, the functioning of institutions and the behavior of economic agents. This new structure of research assumes itself as openly interdisciplinary, bringing together the scientific areas of the associated R & D units – economic sociology and organizations, economics, management, finance, development studies, economic and social history – and to a lesser extent, other areas of the social sciences – such as demography, economic anthropology, social and organizational psychology, and economic law. At the same time that studies with a well-defined disciplinary nature are developed – a requirement that arises from the institutional environment in which science is constructed -, integrated approaches are multiplied, in which no disciplinary matrix is dominant, and which allow a broad understanding of the problems and the best applicability of the proposed recommendations.

The CSG also aims to strengthen the articulation with teaching activities, enhance cooperation with the environment and develop international relations. In terms of teaching, the new unit allows the interconnection and synergies between the doctoral programs in Economic and organizational sociology, management, development studies and economic and social history of ISEG, as well as other participations in postgraduate training. The aim is to carry out a training adapted to the requirements of the research career, not forgetting the importance of the integration of doctorates in the surrounding socio-economic environment.

#4

As for the practical results of the research, it is intended to maintain and reinforce the articulation between theory and practice, and between fundamental research and applied research. Cooperation with the economic and business environment as well as the linkage with public policies is a priority, so that the CSG is a credible voice and an independent social actor that serves as a reference for national and European decision-makers. In relation to the international space, the numerous networks in which the researchers are inserted allow a great geographic reach to their activity. In addition to Europe, there is an important vitality in the relationship with Portuguese-speaking countries, given the importance of relations with Brazil, Portuguese-speaking African countries, Timor-Leste and Macao.
