Who we are

CSG – Research in Social Sciences and Management is a research unit created in 2013, through a consortium between the ADVANCE – Centre for Advanced Research in Management of ISEG, CESA – Centre for African and Development Studies, GHES – Social and Economic History Research Unit, and SOCIUS – Centre for Research in Economic and Organizational Sociology. Belongs to ISEG – Lisbon School of Economics and Management of the University of Lisboa, an institution dedicated to teaching and research, founded in 1911.

CSG – Research in Social Sciences and Management emanates from the four research centres of ISEG – Lisbon School of Economics and Management of Universidade de Lisboa:

ADVANCE – Advanced Research Center in Management ISEG
Founded in 2007, ADVANCE – Advanced Research in Management ISEG is a Non-Profit Private Institution that encourages and supports innovative and high-quality research in Management.

With a Research Team mainly composed by ISEG – Lisbon School of Economics & Management professors, the center develops substantive research combining a deep theoretical basis with extensive empirical research.

ADVANCE Research Center is committed to increase the production of scientific work, presented at top international conferences, as well as the production of scientific articles published in recognized journals. The Center promotes regular Research Seminars and Conferences that foster the interaction between members and main researchers in the various fields of Management, while exposing its participants to cutting-edge knowledge.

CESA – Centre for African and Development Studies
Being one of the oldest research centres dedicated to Development Studies in Portugal, CEsA – Centre for African and Development Studies is a Private Non-Profit Institution founded in 1983 part of the R&D research network of the FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology, as well as member of EADI – European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes.

CEsA is dedicated to the study of Economic, Political, Social and Cultural research in the area of Development Studies, with an emphasis on countries in Africa, Asia-Pacific and Latin America. Its research activities encompass two lines of research in particular: 1. Economics, Development and International Cooperation, and 2. History, Cultures and Identities.

With more than 100 collaborators in the CEsA’s research team, the center has also an important role in teaching activities at ISEG – Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão da Universidade de Lisboa, in the Master in Development and International Cooperation and in the PhD Program in Development Studies.

GHES – Social and Economic History Research Unit
Research centre founded in 1975. Its research team is essentially composed of ISEG faculty. It is since 2011 an autonomous unit and a private non-profit institution. The main activities of the GHES are fundamental and applied research in contemporary and modern Portuguese History, both in the European and world context, as well as support for teaching in the scientific area of history at ISEG, including the preparation of PhD theses in the field of programs in history and development. These activities are related to two main scientific areas: economic history and business history. Economic history includes research related to macroeconomic issues such as economic growth, monetary and financial history, maritime history, forestry history, the welfare state and European integration. Business history includes research related to microeconomic topics such as structure, strategy, ownership and performance of companies and other organizations, as well as the history of markets.

SOCIUS – Centre for Research in Economic and Organisational Sociology
SOCIUS, Research Centre in Economic and Organisational Sociology, is a research centre from  ISEG – Lisbon School of Economics & Management from Universidade de Lisboa, created in May 1991 by teachers and researchers. As a Research and Development Unit (R&D), SOCIUS was first evaluated in 1999, in the scope of the periodic evaluations of R&D Units carried out by FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology, having been classified as “Excellent” in all the evaluation exercises in which it participated (1999, 2002 and 2007).

SOCIUS main scientific area, Economic and Organisational Sociology, is considered in a broad sense that privileges the multiple points of dialogue between contemporary Sociology and Economics, and other Social Sciences interested in the study of the intersection between economic and organizational realities. SOCIUS, through ISEG, is the host research institution of the PhD Programme in Economic and Organisational Sociology

The centre’s research team consists mainly of ISEG – Lisbon School of Economics and Management of the University of Lisboa faculty members, plus full time research fellows and post-doc researchers, as well as faculty from other universities.

The purpose of this convergence is to bring together a group of researchers who share a similar conception of the study of socio-economic and organizational reality, increasing the critical mass and enhancing the complementarity of approaches.
Their investigation integrates the social and behavioral variables in the understanding of complex phenomena, whose particularity follows from the space and time in which they are located.
It is understood that the association of these researchers allows the crossing of their research conceptions, articulating them in the groups and lines of research, creating common events and generating more opportunities for joint work – in a word, allowing the scientific advance in their areas and the best dissemination and transfer of knowledge to society.
